Berkeley Historical Society: Author Talk

On the 115th anniversary of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire, I read from The Book of Lost Light and also discussed the real-life Bay Area characters and stories that inspired the novel. Berkeley historian Charles Wollenberg moderated the program. I shared images of people and places from my research into Berkeley's experience of the earthquake and fire; the artistic milieu of the time; pictorialist photographers and artists of Berkeley; and the enduring influence of Bernard Maybeck, Charles Keeler, and the Berkeley Hillside Club on local architecture. The talk included a Q&A.
